The Top 10 Most-Searched Beauty Questions of 2020, According to Google
As we near the (long-awaited) close of such an eventful year, Google’s Year in Search data is providing a look back at the trillions of searches that defined the past year. After reviewing the top trending searches of the year, it’s safe to say 2020 left us wondering.
Queries for updates on election results, quarantine mandates and stimulus checks soared—as did searches on how to create our own hand sanitizers, face coverings and that trusty whipped coffee—but there was a corner of the internet dedicated to asking all of the beauty-related questions that plagued us while spending extra time at home.
The number-one beauty how-to search? How to cut men’s hair at home, of course. Additional hair-chopping questions on the list: How to cut women’s hair, how to fade hair and how to trim your own hair.
In the midst of frantically texting our colorists how grateful we are for them, searches for “How to color your hair at home” also topped the year’s most-searched list. On the hairstyle front, we were searching for inspiration on how to style curtain bangs—if you’re looking for a hair upgrade as you enter the new year, we can’t recommend these flared, wispy bangs enough—as well as instructions for mastering knotless braids.
The request for instructions on how to “plop hair,” a method of drying curls without allowing water to weigh down and stretch out the curl pattern, also made the top-ten list, saving waves everywhere.
Only one skin-care query made the list this year, but it’s a worthy one: How to dermaplane. If you’re one of the curious, dermaplaning is the act of using a handheld tool, consisting of an angled blade, to remove dead skin cells on the uppermost layer of your skin, along with excess peach fuzz, for your smoothest skin yet.
And last but certainly not least, “How to wash your hands” made the year’s top-searched list, restoring our faith in humanity a bit more. If you’re in the market for a chic hand-sanitizing holiday gift, find our personal wish-list here.
